The Joy of a Dream

By TIFFANY CONTRERAS

Take a minute to sit down, close your eyes and think about a time when someone told you that you couldn’t do something. Do you suddenly feel very warm in your face? Do you feel very angry? So did Joy Mangano in the movie Joy.

Jennifer Lawrence stars as Joy in the film, which landed her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role. If you’ve seen the movie, you won’t have to question why.

Lawrence plays a brilliant role of a woman who has every obstacle thrown her way in the midst of trying to achieve her dreams of creating a mop. Some might think that’s something small, but it’s not small when it hasn’t yet been invented. As Joy tries to juggle life among her divorced parents, a child, work and discouraging people, she never once gave up on herself. She was told “no” over and over again, and nobody believed her idea was good enough. I mean, after all, she was just another ordinary person, right? Wrong. Joy had the trait of passion and belief in herself.

Some people have incredible dreams; they like to dream the impossible, except nothing is ever impossible. You had to have gotten the dream from somewhere. When this happens, there are two types of people: people who go after their dreams and never give up, and people who go after their dreams and then give up because the fight became too great. I believe that if you’re truly passionate about something, giving up isn’t an option.

There are moments when you’ll feel discouraged and as though it’ll never happen, but that’s when you have to keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep going. You may not see the progression, but each day is progress. One of my favorite artists said, “Don’t chase your dreams and then let them go; chase your dreams until they come true.” This is what Joy did.

Joy pushed through the people who didn’t believe in her and discouraged her, some even being members of her very own family. Her drive for success was much greater than those who told her she wasn’t capable. And when people tell you you’re not capable, something happens within you that immediately makes you want to prove them wrong; it makes you want to put everything you have into your dream that much more.

The time came for Joy to display her mop on television. What happened next was unbelievable. The phones began ringing to the point that people couldn’t keep up, and she earned herself the highest of sales. This is possible for you, too.

If what you’re dreaming is something people don’t believe you can achieve, prove them wrong. You absolutely can achieve anything you want. When the idea came to your mind about your dream, you must have seen it somewhere. The people who inspired this dream were in your position at one point, and they didn’t give up. If they can do it, you can do it. Keep one foot in front of the other. Do what Joy did: never give up.
